A new competition format, 14 teams, 13 rounds over eight weeks, the Ranfurly Shield once again on the line, promotion and relegation and 72 matches of footy – this year’s ITM Cup is set for an intense, action-packed season.The Vodafone Wellington Lions are in the Premiership after making the semi-finals in the 2010 ITM Cup. They will play the other six teams in the Premiership and four teams from the Championship.

The competition is organized by CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body, and will be held in Argentina from July 1 to July 24, 2011. The defending champion is Brazil. The highest finishing CONMEBOL team will earn the right to compete for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.

Argentina looked way better when they took apart Costa Rica 3-0 in the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, and the new plan seemed to be the left over schemes from the World Cup. In the South African World Cup the plan seemed to be play without a plan, which made Argentina one of the most entertaining sides to watch in that competition. Going all out for goals and victory Batista approached the Costa Rica game like a playground Napoleon, playing four forwards, plus Fernando Gago in an advanced midfield position. Argentina weren’t alone in their Group Stage problems. Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez knew that qualification was far from a done deal ahead of their final group match with Mexico. Like Argentina they had just two draws ahead of their do-or-die match. While Mexico had done nothing but lose in their two previous Copa Games (2-1 to Chile and 1-0 to Peru), had Uruguay failed to win against Mexico they would have been third in the group and in need of the back door to progress to the quarterfinals.
