It’s a tasty clash as Argentina have decided to actually start playing and winning. It was unfortunate that Costa Rica suffered the brunt of a resurgent Argentina. The win was never in doubt but Argentina went beyond expectations and turned on the skill to book their quarterfinal place.
Argentina looked way better when they took apart Costa Rica 3-0 in the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes, and the new plan seemed to be the left over schemes from the World Cup. In the South African World Cup the plan seemed to be play without a plan, which made Argentina one of the most entertaining sides to watch in that competition. Going all out for goals and victory Batista approached the Costa Rica game like a playground Napoleon, playing four forwards, plus Fernando Gago in an advanced midfield position. It worked like a dream (and dare I say recalled the original Kevin Keegan era Newcastle United of the 1990s) as Argentina created a shed load of chances and converted three of them.
Argentina weren’t alone in their Group Stage problems. Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez knew that qualification was far from a done deal ahead of their final group match with Mexico. Like Argentina they had just two draws ahead of their do-or-die match. While Mexico had done nothing but lose in their two previous Copa Games (2-1 to Chile and 1-0 to Peru), had Uruguay failed to win against Mexico they would have been third in the group and in need of the back door to progress to the quarterfinals.
